New year, new house! (Well… not quite.)

I have this little rule: if I’m bringing something new into my home, something old has to go. It’s not about being strict — it’s about making space. Space for new things, new energy, and for letting go of what no longer serves you (or fits… we’ve all been there).

I like to go through my wardrobe at every change of season, and especially at the start of the year. I’ll set aside clothes to donate or sell, and it always feels lighter afterwards. One thing I’ve learned though: we need to be mindful when decluttering. If clothes are too worn, stained, or torn, they’re not suitable for donation — those should be binned or taken somewhere that can recycle the fabric properly.

Luckily, we have a Clothes POD very close to home, which makes the whole process so much easier. They accept clothes, shoes, and fabrics, sending them off to sorting and recycling facilities. Anything that can’t be reused gets turned into completely new products — how good is that?

If you’re feeling a bit too attached to certain pieces (no judgment here), my tip is this: put them in a bag and tuck them away. If after a month you haven’t worn them — or even thought about them — that’s usually your sign. Time to give them a new life.

I do the same in the kitchen too. Cabinets get a clear-out: containers without lids, jars I swore I’d use “one day” but never did… you know the drill. Just a gentle reminder though — not everything belongs in your household bin. Things like batteries or electrical items need to be disposed of properly.

Honestly, even a few minutes of decluttering can make your home feel brand new. Especially when you live in a small space — it’s amazing how much room you suddenly find. Corners you forgot existed. It really does feel like a fresh start.
